Idiocracy Reclassified by AFI; Now Considered Greatest Documentary in Film History
Washington, D.C. — The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today that Mike Judge’s 2006 cult film Idiocracy will no longer be considered a comedy. Instead, AFI has officially reclassified it as a documentary, citing its “eerily accurate portrayal of America under the current presidential administration.”
“Life Is Copying the Script”
AFI President Dr. Penelope Gantt stated in a press conference: We reviewed hours of White House footage alongside Idiocracy scenes. The similarities were undeniable — from cabinet meetings resembling reality show bloopers, to legislation crafted with the precision of a toddler’s finger-painting. At this point, it would be dishonest to keep calling it satire.
She pointed out that the famous “Brawndo” sequence — in which crops are watered with sports drink because “it’s got electrolytes” — has an uncanny resemblance to recent energy policy proposals. “Replace ‘Brawndo’ with oil subsidies and you get nearly identical dialogue,” Gantt added.
The Administration’s Response
When asked for comment, the President reportedly shrugged and said, “Great movie. Great ratings. I should get royalties.” He then asked aides whether AFI “is the people who made the Oscars” before wandering off to complain about wind turbines.
Later, a White House spokesperson defended the administration, saying, If Idiocracy is a documentary, then we’re proud to be in the sequel. Sequels always do better at the box office.
Academics: “We Told You So”
Progressive scholars hailed the AFI’s ruling as overdue. “We’ve been screaming for years that Judge’s satire was prophetic,” said Dr. Eliza Hernandez of UC Berkeley. “But conservatives mocked higher education instead, chanting ‘elitist!’ while actively proving the film’s thesis.”
She noted that the administration’s open hostility toward climate science, public education, and basic fact-checking has “essentially handed AFI the citation it needed.”
Cultural Fallout
Hollywood insiders say the announcement has already spurred a surge in Idiocracy streaming numbers, especially among young voters, who see it as shorthand for describing national politics. Meme accounts have flooded timelines with side-by-side comparisons: a Camacho rally speech next to real-life campaign rallies, both featuring gunfire, fireworks, and random slogans shouted into megaphones.
Meanwhile, right-wing commentators blasted the reclassification as “elitist movie snobbery.” One conservative pundit fumed on live television: If this is a documentary, then Sharknado is a documentary about coastal liberal elites.
The statement was followed immediately by a chyron correction reading: “Sharknado is fictional (for now).”
The Verdict
In the end, AFI’s announcement solidified what many progressives already felt: that Idiocracy is no longer an exaggerated warning but a grim mirror of daily life.
The film wasn’t ahead of its time. We were just behind on collapsing.
